The New York Yankees saw their momentum stall Sunday, falling 7-4 to the Houston Astros at Daikin Park, a loss that snapped an eight-game win streak and sent right-hander Luis Gil back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after another uneven outing.
For more than a week, pitching had carried New York, with the staff posting a 1.75 ERA during the streak. That formula didn’t hold. Gil ran into trouble right away, issuing a leadoff walk to Carlos Correa before Christian Walker turned on a changeup for a two-run homer in the first. Isaac Paredes added to the damage in the third with another two-run shot.
The outing never stabilized. Gil allowed Correa to reach again in the fifth, then surrendered a double to Yordan Alvarezthat helped push across two more runs and end his day. He was charged with six earned runs on five hits and three walks over four-plus innings, failing to record a strikeout as hitters consistently put his pitches in play.
The lack of swing-and-miss has become a concern, and Gil’s ERA climbed to 6.05 through 19.1 innings.
With Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón nearing returns, the Yankees opted to give him time to reset.
New York will look to bounce back Monday when it opens a three-game series in Texas against the Rangers.
