Suspect in custody after shooting scare at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

A heavily armed man was taken into custody Saturday night after attempting to breach a Secret Service checkpoint, triggering gunfire and a chaotic evacuation at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C.

The incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. at the Washington Hilton, where President Donald Trump, the first lady, and more than 2,000 attendees were gathered for the annual event when shots rang out near a lobby entrance.

Authorities said the suspect, identified as a 31-year-old California man who had been staying at the hotel, rushed a security checkpoint armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives. Secret Service agents immediately engaged, stopping him before he could reach the ballroom where the dinner was underway.

During the confrontation, the suspect fired at least one shot at a Secret Service agent. Officials said the agent was struck at close range but was protected by a ballistic vest and did not suffer serious injuries. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for evaluation after the incident.

Inside the ballroom, the reaction was immediate and chaotic. Witnesses described hearing several loud pops before guests dove under tables for cover as drinks spilled and law enforcement flooded the area. Some attendees said they were tackled or rushed out by security as officers shouted warnings and moved people to safety.

President Trump said he initially thought the noise was unrelated before realizing it was gunfire, adding that Secret Service agents moved him and other officials out within seconds. He later praised law enforcement for their rapid response and described the suspect as a lone actor.

Officials said the suspect is expected to face multiple federal charges, including assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon and using a firearm during a violent crime, with additional charges likely as the investigation continues.

Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, have launched a full investigation into the suspect’s background and motive. Authorities said there is no indication of a broader threat.

The event, which marked Trump’s first appearance at the correspondents’ dinner as a sitting president, was cut short and will be rescheduled. Organizers confirmed that no attendees inside the main event space were injured.
