Yankees drop series finale in Houston, eight-game win streak snapped

Luis Gil struggled again as the New York Yankees saw their eight-game win streak come to an end with a 7-4 loss to the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park on Sunday, dropping to 18-10 while Houston improved to 11-18. Gil failed to build off his previous start, allowing early damage and recording no strikeouts for the first time in his major league career as the Astros took control.

Houston struck in the first inning on a two-run home run by Christian Walker, then added separation in the third when Isaac Paredes lined a two-run shot off the left-field foul pole. Gil exited in the fifth after allowing six runs on five hits and three walks over four innings, while Spencer Arrighetti stifled New York’s lineup with one run allowed on three hits across seven innings. Following the game, the Yankees optioned Gil to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Aaron Judge provided a highlight on his 34th birthday, crushing a sixth-inning solo home run for his 10th of the season. The Yankees threatened late with four straight two-out hits in the ninth, including RBI contributions from Paul Goldschmidt, J.C. Escarra and Ryan McMahon, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Jazz Chisholm Jr. added two hits and a stolen base, while Goldschmidt doubled twice.

Box Score

The Yankees remain in Texas to open a three-game series against the Rangers on Monday at Globe Life Field, with first pitch set for 8:05 p.m. Max Fried is scheduled to face Jack Leiter.
