Ithaca shelter plan sparks safety debate

An $18 million shelter plan is moving forward in Ithaca, but concerns are mounting over whether its design will keep people safe, according to the Tompkins Weekly.

Tompkins County lawmakers approved seeking $15 million in state funds for an 80-bed facility on Cherry Street. The three-story building would place services on the ground floor and house residents above, with a mix of bunk-style and private rooms.

Neighbors and service providers warn the layout could create risks, especially for people with mental health needs or mobility issues. Others question whether 80 beds can meet demand, as homelessness continues to rise.

Construction likely won’t begin until after winter 2028, leaving current stopgap solutions in place for years.
