Elmira man sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison on drug, gun charges

A Chemung County man will spend more than a decade in federal prison after authorities said he trafficked large quantities of methamphetamine while armed with multiple firearms inside a home where young children were present.

Kavon A. Wilson, 32, of Elmira, was sentenced to 151 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford after being convicted of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possessing firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Federal prosecutors said the case stems from an April 2, 2024 search of a residence on Erie Street in Elmira, where investigators found Wilson’s girlfriend inside with an infant and two other small children. During the search, authorities recovered a loaded handgun from beneath a couch pillow and located another loaded firearm elsewhere in the home.

Investigators also seized approximately 1,559 grams of methamphetamine, 124 grams of cocaine, 154 fentanyl pills, and more than $11,500 in cash, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Wilson was taken into custody when he approached the residence during the search.

In addition to the prison sentence, Wilson was ordered to forfeit two firearms and 14 rounds of ammunition.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert A. Marangola and investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Violent Crimes Task Force, New York State Police, and the Elmira Police Department.
