Ithaca power grid upgrade aims to cut outages and boost reliability

A major power upgrade is underway in Ithaca, aiming to keep the lights on for thousands, according to the Ithaca Journal. New York State Electric & Gas has started a $4.7 million overhaul of a key substation serving more than 5,000 customers.

The Cayuga Heights site will get a new capacitor bank to improve electricity flow and reliability. Construction began in March and is expected to wrap up in 2027.

The project is part of a broader $46 million local effort and ties into a proposed $16 billion statewide grid plan. Officials say the upgrades will reduce outages and support future growth.
