A Rochester hiker was rescued last week after falling into a steep gully at High Tor Wildlife Management Area in Naples, prompting a multi-agency rope rescue response.
The incident unfolded around 6:34 p.m. on April 10, when Ontario County 911 requested assistance from state Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers. The 30-year-old hiker had fallen approximately 50 feet into a gully, leaving them unable to climb out without specialized help.
Forest Ranger Lt. Miller responded and coordinated with rope rescue teams from Ontario and Yates counties to execute the technical extraction. Crews worked to safely raise the hiker out of the gully, navigating the steep terrain and challenging conditions.
Once brought to safety, the individual was evaluated by emergency medical technicians at the roadside. No details were released about the extent of any injuries.
The rescue operation concluded at 9:39 p.m., with all personnel clearing the scene.
The incident was one of several responses handled by Forest Rangers across New York during the week, underscoring the risks associated with hiking in rugged terrain, particularly in areas with steep drop-offs and limited access.
