A structure fire in Canandaigua on April 15 left a two-story home uninhabitable after crews battled heavy smoke and fire conditions inside the residence.
Emergency responders were called to 131 Thad Chapin Street around 6:20 p.m. after a report of a home filling with smoke. While en route, the call was upgraded to a possible structure fire, prompting a full response from the Canandaigua Fire Department.
Fire crews arrived within minutes and encountered heavy smoke on the first floor, with conditions extending to the second story. After navigating the interior, firefighters located the source of the fire in the basement and launched an aggressive attack, bringing the blaze under control within about 30 minutes.
Officials said the home sustained significant smoke damage, along with fire damage and impacts to multiple utilities in the basement. The residence has been deemed uninhabitable. No injuries were reported.
Additional support was provided by the Canandaigua Veterans Affairs Fire Department and Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department, which assisted with suppression efforts and served as the rapid intervention team. Multiple local agencies also responded, including Ontario County 911, emergency management, police, and public works, along with utility providers.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the city’s fire investigation team in coordination with the Canandaigua Police Department.
