Homeless families placed in NY motels sometimes living near sex offenders

Families placed in New York motels are sometimes living alongside registered sex offenders, according to Spectrum News 1.

A review found multiple counties using hotels where level two and three offenders also live, including several sites in Broome County. Records show at least four offenders stayed at one Endicott motel used for families.

Officials say housing shortages drive the overlap, even as policies aim to keep groups separate. Lawmakers and residents are raising safety concerns, while advocates argue strict housing rules also make it harder for offenders to find stable places to live.
