Farmers and health advocates are urging New York to halt sewage sludge use on farmland, warning it could contaminate water and soil, according to Spectrum News 1.
More than 70 organizations signed a letter pushing for a five-year moratorium on spreading biosolids, citing risks from PFAS chemicals and bacteria. Some residents already link the practice to polluted wells in parts of the state.
Lawmakers are weighing the issue alongside a proposed $10 million fund to test farmland for contamination. Farm leaders support testing but warn there’s still no clear fix if dangerous PFAS levels are found.
