Three teens in Wayne County are gearing up to raise their own bees, according to the Finger Lakes Times, after winning a scholarship tied to a longtime beekeeper’s legacy. Cecilia, Elihu, and Lorelei Galek earned $500 from Elwood Smith’s estate to launch their first hive.
The siblings pitched the idea in a joint essay, saying beekeeping will teach responsibility and support their garden through pollination. A local farm will donate the bees, giving them a hands-on start.
Veteran beekeepers say the hobby rewards patience but demands constant care, especially with disease and feeding challenges. They believe the Galeks’ teamwork could help sustain the region’s beekeeping future.
