A Finger Lakes attorney has announced a run for Congress in New York’s 24th District.
Todd Sloan, 54, said he will run as an independent candidate on the “Upstate” line.
Sloan said he filed with the Federal Election Commission on Feb. 22.
He plans to begin collecting signatures starting April 14, when the petition window opens for independent candidates. A total of 3,500 signatures is required to appear on the November ballot.
Sloan said his campaign will focus on the role of Congress and issues affecting upstate residents, including farmers.
“The Constitution assigns Congress the power to legislate on war, taxation, immigration and spending,” Sloan said. “Farmers can plan around a tax. Farmers can plan around a regulation. What they cannot plan around is the government changing the rules halfway through the season.”
Sloan practices law in the Finger Lakes region and said his work has taken him across several counties, primarily in Cayuga County.
The 24th Congressional District seat is currently held by Republican Claudia Tenney.
