Upstate lawmakers are gearing up for a budget fight as they push for more funding for cities and towns outside New York City, according to Spectrum News 1.
Gov. Kathy Hochul proposed $1.5 billion in aid for New York City but only $150 million in temporary assistance for upstate municipalities. Legislators from outside the city say the imbalance could leave local taxpayers covering the gap.
Both the Senate and Assembly added more municipal aid in their budget plans, including hundreds of millions for cities across the state. Lawmakers say the challenge now is keeping those increases in the final state budget.
