New York officials are pushing new strategies to cut road salt pollution that can harm drinking water and wildlife, according to Spectrum News 1.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation is offering grants and promoting technology that helps plow roads more efficiently and reduce salt use. In Cayuga County, new equipment like temperature sensors, brine spreaders and adjustable plow blades aims to limit how much salt ends up in waterways.
Experts say even small amounts can cause problems. A single teaspoon of salt can pollute about five gallons of water and contribute to harmful algal blooms.
