Vacate order remains at Ithaca apartments

City officials are still working to clear residents from a downtown Ithaca apartment tower after a fire safety risk forced a mandatory evacuation, according to WENY.

The city issued the order March 4 for the Asteri Apartments at 118 East Green St. after firefighters found broken and missing stairwell windows that could disrupt emergency exits and smoke ventilation. The order affects 181 units from the fourth through 12th floors.

Officials say some tenants remain inside despite the order while the city works with property owner Vecino Group to address the safety issues and help residents relocate.
