New York lawmakers are pushing a major food security package in the state budget to offset federal cuts to nutrition programs, according to WETM.
Democratic legislators and anti-hunger advocates rallied in Albany Monday to support the proposal, which includes $150 million for programs like Nourish New York and hunger prevention assistance. The plan would also raise the minimum monthly food benefit from $24 to $100.
Supporters also want $244 million to provide food aid to about 41,000 refugees, asylees and victims of violence who no longer qualify for federal SNAP benefits.
