New Cayuga Lake park named Three Falls

A new state park along Cayuga Lake will soon offer expanded public access, hiking trails and waterfront recreation on a former Boy Scout camp property.

State officials announced the 90-acre site will be named Three Falls State Park, highlighting the three waterfalls located on or near the property.

The park sits just north of Taughannock Falls State Park on land formerly known as Camp Barton. New York State acquired the property in 2025 from the Baden-Powell Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Plans call for preserving the site’s natural features while expanding public recreation. Proposed improvements include restored camp cabins, new hiking trails and waterfall viewing areas, docks and kayak launches along Cayuga Lake and a nature center for environmental education.

Officials said the project will also protect sensitive wildlife habitats, including nesting peregrine falcons along the Trumansburg Creek gorge.

The park will be operated by the Three Falls Local Development Corporation, a partnership involving the Village of Trumansburg and the towns of Ulysses and Covert.

The newly released conceptual plan outlines improvements in phases and includes upgrades to existing infrastructure, new restrooms, event spaces and more than 110 parking spaces.

State parks officials said the project aims to balance recreation with conservation while improving public access to Cayuga Lake.
