Cayuga County recorded the highest rate of suicide-related emergency room visits in New York outside New York City in 2024, according to The Citizen.
State health data shows 1,272 ER visits per 100,000 residents, and the county has missed several state mental health prevention goals. Officials say barriers like provider shortages and stigma still limit access to care.
Local leaders say the situation isn’t entirely bleak. Suicide investigations and crisis calls have dropped since pandemic highs, and expanded mobile crisis teams and therapy services are helping connect more residents with support.
