Businesses oppose New York’s proposed packaging law

More than 100 business groups are urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to overhaul a proposed law that would require companies to cut packaging waste in New York, according to the Times Union.

The legislation would require companies selling products in the state to reduce packaging by 30% over 12 years, limit certain chemicals in packaging and help fund recycling programs. Environmental advocates say the plan could save the state about $1.3 billion by reducing landfill waste.

Business leaders argue the proposal would increase costs, create compliance challenges and limit consumer choice, while supporters say it would significantly reduce plastic pollution.
