Free snowmobile weekends open to visitors

Out-of-state snowmobilers can hit New York’s trails for free on two upcoming weekends as part of a statewide push to boost winter tourism.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced it will waive registration fees for out-of-state and Canadian riders February 27–March 1 and March 6–8.

The promotion, part of Governor Kathy Hochul’s “Unplug and Play” initiative, allows properly registered and insured snowmobilers from outside New York to ride the state’s more than 10,000 miles of trails without purchasing a New York registration during those weekends.

Outside of the promotion, out-of-state riders must register their snowmobiles with New York before using state trails.

“One of the positive benefits of this year’s snow and deep freeze is all the outdoor winter recreation possibilities and snowmobiling is certainly one of the most popular,” OPRHP Acting Commissioner Kathy Moser said. She encouraged visitors to “Get Offline, Get Outside,” while reminding riders to put safety first.

State officials said the free weekends support tourism and local economies. Snowmobile registration fees collected by the Department of Motor Vehicles fund the Snowmobile Trail Development and Maintenance Fund. Counties distribute those funds to about 230 snowmobile clubs that groom and maintain trails across the state.

Empire State Development President and CEO Hope Knight said the weekends invite visitors to explore New York’s diverse landscapes while supporting small businesses. DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder urged riders to wear helmets and avoid drugs or alcohol, noting that excessive speed and intoxication remain the leading causes of snowmobile injuries in New York.

DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton called snowmobiling a great way to enjoy winter recreation and encouraged riders to follow safety rules and check trail conditions before heading out.

The New York State Snowmobile Association credited volunteer clubs and landowners for maintaining more than 10,600 miles of trails statewide.

Officials recommend riders inspect and maintain their machines, wear DOT-certified helmets and proper gear, ride with a buddy, stay on marked trails, and avoid riding on frozen bodies of water unless absolutely necessary and with proper precautions.

New York residents must renew snowmobile registrations annually. Registration costs $100, or $45 for members of a local snowmobile club. Out-of-state riders who plan to snowmobile in New York outside the free weekends can obtain a temporary 15-day registration through the DMV.

Trail maps and condition updates are available through local snowmobile clubs, the New York State Snowmobile Association, and the State Parks and DEC websites.
