Tenants, landlords clash over eviction bill

A packed Syracuse Common Council chamber turned heated as tenants and landlords sparred over the proposed “Good Cause Eviction” law, according to WSYR. Lawmakers will vote Monday on whether to opt in to the state measure, which lets tenants challenge evictions they consider unreasonable.

Supporters, including City Auditor Alex Marion, say the law would protect renters from unjust lease nonrenewals. Critics argue it would make it harder to remove problem tenants and impose a one-size-fits-all rule on property owners.

The state passed the law in 2024, but cities must opt in. Albany, Ithaca and Rochester already have. Councilor Marty Nave says he will reflect on public input before casting his vote.
