Nearly 1.5 million New Yorkers could lose health coverage this summer, and Gov. Kathy Hochul can’t find Republican allies to stop it, according to POLITICO. She wants New York’s House Republicans to help secure a federal waiver that would preserve coverage for about 1.3 million low-income residents and legal noncitizens.
The risk stems from President Donald Trump’s tax-and-spending law, which jeopardizes the state’s Essential Plan. Hochul’s team shared data and held meetings with GOP offices, but several Republicans say she hasn’t built real working relationships.
The state could revert to an older health program model to tap surplus federal funds, yet roughly 470,000 people would still lose coverage. With tight House margins and swing districts in play, the standoff could shape both health care access and New York’s political future.
