Thruway in CNY, FLX set for chip boom

A stretch of Interstate 90 is racing toward “semiconductor superhighway” status, with 25% of America’s advanced microchips expected along the corridor within five years, according to Spectrum News 1.

New York already hosts more than 150 semiconductor facilities, including Micron and GlobalFoundries. Leaders say artificial intelligence fuels the surge, as AI systems demand powerful chips and high-bandwidth memory.

Right now, no company makes high-bandwidth memory chips in the U.S. Micron plans to change that in Central New York, with production slated to begin after its first lab opens in 2030. Officials say the buildout will cement upstate New York as a national hub for AI-driven chip manufacturing.
