Work requirements are coming back for many New Yorkers who rely on food assistance, tightening the rules to keep benefits, according to Spectrum News.
Starting March 1, able-bodied adults without dependents ages 18 to 64 must document at least 80 hours a month of work, job training, or approved activities to keep SNAP beyond three months in three years. State officials say hundreds of thousands could be affected, though many may qualify for exemptions tied to disability, pregnancy, or caregiving.
Officials with the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance say local social services offices will contact recipients and help screen for exemptions or work programs. Advocates warn the timing hurts as food prices stay high and benefits already fall short.
