New census numbers show New York barely grew at all — and that could cost the state real power in Washington, according to The Times Union.
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows New York’s population increased by just 1,008 people over 12 years, leaving the state projected to lose two congressional seats after the 2030 census. Despite three straight years of slight growth, New York’s population remains more than 200,000 below its 2020 level — the worst performance in the nation.
Gov. Kathy Hochul has proposed $3 million to boost census outreach, while lawmakers like state Sen. Jeremy Cooney are pushing for far more, warning undercounts could shrink representation and federal funding.
