A $12 million infusion of federal funding is heading to Upstate New York and the North Country for housing and economic development projects, according to Rep. Elise Stefanik’s office.
Stefanik says the funding, included in a federal appropriations bill, will support housing initiatives and major redevelopment projects across multiple counties.
“I am proud to deliver $12 million in federal funding for housing and critical economic development projects in our district,” Stefanik said. “This significant investment will serve as a catalyst for economic growth across Upstate New York for decades to come.”
The largest share of the funding, $5 million, will go to the Lake Champlain–Lake George Regional Planning Board’s North Country Housing Initiative. The money aims to increase workforce housing in Clinton, Essex, Hamilton, Warren, and Washington counties through outreach, pre-development work, and construction and rehabilitation of housing units.
Executive Director Beth Gilles called the funding transformative, saying the initiative targets barriers like outdated zoning, high pre-development costs, and limited funding for middle-income housing.
Another $4 million will support Montgomery County’s Business Development Center construction at the former Beech-Nut site in Canajoharie. The project plans to redevelop the historic site into a mixed-use space that includes affordable workforce housing.
“This funding is a major milestone for the future of Canajoharie and Montgomery County,” County Executive Pete Vroman said. He said the project will help unlock the site’s potential and move long-planned redevelopment forward.
The remaining $3 million will fund the Village of Cobleskill’s Grandview Drive Project. The money will improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety near Cobleskill Regional Hospital.
Stefanik’s office says the funding reflects years of work to secure federal support for local projects. She also noted that she has helped bring nearly $1 billion in federal funds to the district during her time in Congress.
