Hochul budget still faces pushback

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s new budget may be lighter on policy, but lawmakers already see fights ahead, according to Spectrum News 1.

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie welcomed fewer policy add-ons but flagged likely disputes over car insurance reforms and proposed changes to environmental reviews. He said lawmakers want to protect accident victims and local control.

In the Senate, James Skoufis said Hochul’s child care plan leans too heavily toward New York City, leaving upstate behind. Immigration protections and possible tax hikes could also spark debate as talks continue.

Lawmakers expect negotiations to heat up as the April budget deadline nears.
