State names 75 ways to save money

New Yorkers looking to cut everyday costs have a new resource aimed at helping their dollars go further.

The New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection released a free Money Savings Guide this week, outlining more than 75 ways residents can save on common expenses, from groceries and utilities to subscriptions and transportation.

State officials said the guide supports Gov. Kathy Hochul’s push to make New York more affordable, especially as many households feel squeezed by rising prices. The department pointed to a Wells Fargo money study showing 90% of respondents experienced sticker shock from higher prices, while 76% said they are actively looking to cut back on spending.

“Affordability is a top priority for Governor Hochul, and that starts with providing New Yorkers with the tools they need to save on everyday expenses,” Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley said. “This Money Savings Guide offers practical tips on everything from saving money on groceries and utilities to subscription services and transportation.”

The guide covers a wide range of everyday decisions, encouraging consumers to review and cancel unused subscriptions, plan meals to reduce food waste, shop sales more strategically, and understand store return policies before buying. It also includes tips on lowering heating and cooling costs, such as adjusting thermostats, weatherizing homes, and scheduling regular heating system maintenance.

Energy use is another major focus. The guide urges residents to shut down electronics when not in use, unplug devices that draw “phantom” power, and stream content on more energy-efficient devices to reduce electricity costs.

State officials said small changes can add up, and the goal is to help consumers feel more confident and intentional about their spending. The guide is designed to be flexible, recognizing that every household’s financial situation is different.

The full Money Savings Guide is available through the Division of Consumer Protection. Consumers can also contact the state’s Consumer Assistance Helpline at 1-800-697-1220 for help resolving disputes or finding additional resources.
