A factory that anchored Wayland’s economy for more than a century will shut its doors, according to Hornell Evening Tribune.
HNI Corporation announced plans to close its Gunlocke manufacturing plant in Wayland in 2027, eliminating about 135 jobs. The company says it will shift production to other North American facilities during 2026 as part of a consolidation strategy.
HNI expects the move to save up to $8 million a year and said the Gunlocke brand will continue. The Wayland plant dates back to 1902 and once produced furniture for the Oval Office.
