Waterloo solar project pushes for lighter oversight

A massive solar proposal in Seneca County wants state regulators to skip a public hearing, according to the Finger Lakes Times. The developer behind the North Seneca Solar Project asked the New York Public Service Commission to rule on its application using paperwork already filed.

The 90-megawatt project would span 827 acres across Waterloo and Junius, spread along several rural roads and Route 96. The company seeks a certificate of public convenience and necessity without additional hearings, a move that shortens the review process.

State officials previously approved the project’s siting permit, saying it would support clean energy goals. Developers project millions in local tax payments and about $23 million in construction wages over time.

Residents can submit written objections to the commission by Jan. 10.
