Residents are calling it a “gigantic monstrosity” — and they’re not staying quiet, according to Tompkins Weekly.
Newfield homeowners say NYSEG’s plan to replace aging wooden power poles with 100-foot steel structures will ruin scenic views, hurt property values, and wasn’t clearly communicated. The $88M infrastructure project aims to upgrade a 21-mile transmission line and boost power capacity by 150%.
The utility says it’s a long-term fix for blackout issues, but locals argue they weren’t properly informed and want alternatives — like shorter poles or updated materials. Construction could start in 2027 if state regulators approve it this spring.
