Ribbon cutting, bonfire to open It’s a Wonderful Life Festival

Seneca Falls is ready to channel the spirit of Bedford Falls once again as it kicks off its beloved “It’s a Wonderful Life” Festival this Friday.

The three-day celebration, inspired by the classic Frank Capra film, runs December 12–14 and begins with a ribbon-cutting and grand marshal presentation at 10 a.m. Friday on Fall Street.

“This festival reminds us of the warmth, generosity, and sense of community that inspired It’s a Wonderful Life,” said Haidee Oropallo, president of the festival committee.

Organizers will also announce an $8,000 donation to local nonprofits—matching the exact amount lost by Uncle Billy in the movie. This year’s beneficiaries include:

  • Seneca County House of Concern
  • Community Action Program Cayuga/Seneca
  • Seneca Falls Backpack Program, Inc.
  • Trevor’s Gift

Grand marshal named for 2025

This year’s Ruth Dakin Bailey Grand Marshal award will go to Rhonda Jasper, executive director of the Seneca County United Way. The award will be presented by Cari and Jeff Loop, daughter and son-in-law of Virginia Patton Moss, who played Ruth Dakin Bailey in the film.

The couple will also lead the official ribbon cutting to open the weekend’s events.

Friday night bonfire brings the glow

Friday evening wraps with “It’s a Wonderful Bonfire” at the gazebo near Trinity Church on Lower Fall Street. Highlights include:

  • A visit from Santa Claus
  • Caroling by the Calvary Chapel Worship Singers
  • Hot dogs and hot chocolate from Harry’s Hots
  • Announcement of the Holiday Lights Contest winners

The event is designed as a warm, family-friendly kickoff to a weekend filled with nostalgic fun.

Festival continues all weekend

Visitors can enjoy live performances, themed activities, and guided walks that explore the town’s link to the movie’s setting. Seneca Falls has long embraced its role as the real-life inspiration behind Capra’s fictional Bedford Falls.
