Geneva’s Castle Street plaza finally coming down

More than three years after a fire gutted a Castle Street plaza in Geneva, demolition is finally set to begin, according to the Finger Lakes Times. Heavy equipment is on site, and Sessler Wrecking is ready to tear down the former Madia’s Big M grocery building — though the attached laundry will stay.

Environmental monitors and asbestos precautions are in place, but no abatement will be done due to the building’s condition. City officials pushed for the teardown after residents complained about the eyesore, calling the long delay unacceptable.

Plans for redevelopment are still alive. A new proposal could be ready by year’s end, though earlier grant efforts failed to secure funding.
