Pedestrian reportedly struck in Penn Yan village sparking debate about crosswalk lighting

A pedestrian was reportedly hit near St. Marks Terrace on Liberty Street in Penn Yan during rainy conditions, sparking fresh concern from residents about poor lighting near village crosswalks.

The incident happened near a right turn by the senior housing complex, according to scanner traffic. The condition of the pedestrian hasn’t been confirmed by first responders, but dozens of residents offered prayers and well wishes online.

While the crash itself drew concern, it also reignited an ongoing debate: Why aren’t more village crosswalks better lit?

“Why does only Main Street have the flashing lights but not the crosswalks by the school?” one person wrote, echoing a frustration many others quickly agreed with.

Several residents noted the street lights in other parts of the village seem dimmer than they used to be. “The crosswalks need better lighting!!!” another added.

Some pointed to specific areas like the one near St. Marks as being especially difficult to see at night.
