A fire gutted a room filled with Thanksgiving food donations at Our Lady of Peace Parish in Geneva, according to the Finger Lakes Times. The Sunday night blaze destroyed thousands of canned goods and shelf-stable items meant for the church’s annual holiday meal drive.
Seneca Foods, which had donated 2,000 cans, quickly pledged to replace the lost items. Other community members are also stepping in with food and cash donations. Despite the setback, the Nov. 24 distribution will still happen — now relocated to Geneva Hydrant Hose.
Fire crews from several departments knocked down the blaze within 15 minutes. Investigators believe the cause was electrical. Thankfully, most fresh food hadn’t yet arrived, so turkeys and produce were spared.
