The Town of Ulysses has officially taken ownership of Smith Woods, one of the Finger Lakes’ last old-growth forests, ensuring public access and protection for generations, according to the Ithaca Journal.

The 32-acre forest, once stewarded by the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI), has served as an outdoor classroom and ecological refuge since the early 1900s. PRI donated the land to help preserve its educational and environmental value.

Town officials say they’ll continue conservation efforts and maintain Smith Woods as a community resource for recreation, learning, and natural heritage.
