TCAT asked its funders for $500K each to avoid service cuts — but Cornell only offered $31K, infuriating city and county officials, according to The Ithaca Voice.
Ithaca and Tompkins County approved the full amount. Cornell’s far smaller contribution could slash the total to just $93K, triggering what TCAT leaders warn could be “disastrous” cuts. Mayor Cantelmo called the offer “insulting,” while TCAT board members called it “pathetic.”
Cornell says TCAT still has cash reserves, but the agency argues those are needed for critical bus upgrades. Without help, rising costs could unravel post-COVID ridership gains.
