Nuclear energy summit draws praise and protest in CNY

As New York eyes a zero-emission grid by 2040, leaders gathered in Syracuse to push advanced nuclear energy as a key solution — but not everyone’s on board. According to Spectrum News 1, around 80 protesters rallied outside Monday’s Nuclear Summit, warning that nuclear power isn’t as green as officials claim.

State leaders say advanced reactors are safer and essential to meet growing energy needs, especially with EV mandates and projects like Micron’s chip plant looming. Opponents point to radioactive waste and past environmental harm on Indigenous lands.

A statewide nuclear plan is expected by late 2026.
