AG opens investigation into deadly crash involving off-duty NYPD officer

The New York Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into the death of a motorcyclist following a crash with an off-duty NYPD officer in Queens.

According to preliminary details from the Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI), the incident happened around 7:58 p.m. on September 27. The off-duty officer was turning left from Francis Lewis Boulevard onto Linden Boulevard when their vehicle collided with a motorcycle.

The motorcycle operator was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger on the motorcycle was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Under New York law, OSI is required to investigate any death that may have been caused by a police or peace officer, whether they are on- or off-duty. The goal is to ensure independent oversight of cases involving potential police involvement in civilian deaths.

Officials noted that these are preliminary facts and could change as the investigation progresses.
