Officer stabbed by inmate at Auburn prison

A corrections officer was stabbed outside the mess hall at Auburn Correctional Facility after an inmate suddenly attacked him with a homemade weapon.

Officials say the assault happened on September 19, when the officer was monitoring inmates leaving lunch. The 56-year-old inmate initially walked past, then doubled back and struck the officer in the stomach with a sharp object.

The officer used OC spray to subdue the attacker, who was then taken to a Special Housing Unit. A metal shank fell from the inmate’s pants during a frisk. A second weapon — a plastic ice pick — was later recovered near the scene.

The officer was treated on-site and then taken to Auburn Hospital. He hasn’t yet returned to duty.

The inmate is serving a life sentence for multiple violent crimes, including two murders and the shooting of a New York City police officer.
