Trump taps aide to lead key prosecutor’s office

President Trump says he’s nominating White House aide Lindsey Halligan to be the top federal prosecutor in Virginia, according to the Associated Press.

The move follows the forced exit of U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert, who resisted pressure to charge New York Attorney General Letitia James over disputed mortgage paperwork. Trump, calling the case urgent, has repeatedly claimed the investigation is politically motivated.

Halligan, part of Trump’s legal team for years, would now oversee the same office handling the case. Hours before her nomination, conservative lawyer Mary “Maggie” Cleary was named acting U.S. attorney for the district.
