Facing a $34 billion budget gap, New York should consider closing some state psychiatric hospitals, according to the Mental Health Association of New York State, Spectrum News reports.
CEO Glenn Liebman says the group wants a formal commission—modeled after past federal base closure panels—to evaluate which hospitals to shut down. The goal: “right-size” the system and reduce spending without harming care.
The proposal comes as lawmakers weigh tough choices to balance the state budget.
