Tyler Bass’ left hip/groin injury is going to cost him the first month of the regular season.
The Buffalo Bills placed the kicker on injured reserve Friday, meaning he will miss a minimum of four games.
Veteran kicker Matt Prater, who was signed to the practice squad Thursday, is expected to be elevated to the game-day roster for Sunday’s season opener against the Baltimore Ravens.
Prater can be elevated from the practice squad a maximum of three times before the team must choose to either sign him to the active roster or release him.
The 41-year-old Prater impressed in a workout this week after going unsigned since the Arizona Cardinals released him in March. A proven leg with 18 NFL seasons, Prater has played for the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, and Cardinals, converting 407-of-487 field goals (83.6%) and 587-of-603 extra points (97.3%) across 254 games.
