Swimming closed at Hinckley Reservoir due to low water

The beach at Hinckley Reservoir Day Use Area in Herkimer County will close for swimming starting Friday, August 22, due to low water levels.

The DEC says the closure is needed to protect public safety, citing exposed hazards, reduced wading depth, and limited lifeguard visibility. Other activities like picnicking and paddling will still be allowed.

The 2,880-acre reservoir, managed by the New York State Canal Corporation, often sees its lowest water levels in August. Officials say they’ll continue monitoring conditions and will share updates as needed.

For more info, visitors can call (315) 826-3800 or check the DEC website.
