Geneva offers free backyard compost kits to cut waste

Geneva residents can now pick up free composting kits at City Hall — part of a push to cut down on landfill waste and support a healthier local environment.

The kits, provided by the Ontario County Department of Sustainability and Solid Waste Management, are available at the City Clerk’s Office, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Each kit includes an 80-gallon compost bin, a kitchen collector, a screen base, an aerator, and a how-to guide — everything needed to start composting food scraps and yard waste at home. For those without backyard space, green-lid kitchen caddies are available for food scrap drop-off at Doran Avenue.

According to county officials, composting helps keep organics out of landfills, saves money, boosts soil quality, and even improves water retention. It also reduces emissions and supports local jobs tied to organics recycling.
