Mets blow early six-run lead in brutal loss to Braves (highlights)

A torrid start unraveled into disaster for the New York Mets on Wednesday night, as an early six-run cushion dissolved in an 11-6 loss to the Atlanta Braves after a rain delay of one hour and 35 minutes.

The Mets jumped on former teammate Carlos Carrasco immediately after the long delay. Francisco Lindor’s leadoff double set the tone before Pete Alonso drove in two with a sharp single to center, tying him for the MLB lead with 98 RBI. Cedric Mullins added a sacrifice fly, and Juan Soto’s 407-foot homer in the second made it 5-0. Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil followed with doubles to push the lead to six, chasing Carrasco after just two innings.

David Peterson breezed early but cracked in the fourth, issuing four walks and surrendering a bases-clearing double to Jurickson Profar. Reed Garrett relieved him and immediately gave up an RBI single to Marcell Ozuna before Michael Harris II crushed a two-out grand slam, flipping the score to 9-6. The nine-run frame was the Mets’ worst inning since 2019.

New York’s bats fell silent against the Braves’ bullpen, which delivered seven shutout innings. The Mets managed only one scoring chance after the fourth, squandering a Starling Marte single when Alonso was thrown out at the plate.

Paul Blackburn, in his first game back from the injured list, worked five innings of relief but allowed a two-run shot to Ozuna in the sixth.
