Cayuga County urges parents to get children vaccinated

As families prepare for a new school year, Cayuga County health officials are urging parents to make immunizations a top priority this August—National Immunization Awareness Month.

In a release issued Friday, the Cayuga County Health Department reminded parents that New York State law requires all daycare and school-aged children to receive vaccines for a list of preventable diseases, including hepatitis B, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and more. “One of the most important ways to get your child ready for school is to ensure that they are up to date with immunizations,” the notice stated.

According to New York State Department of Health guidelines, any child who has not received at least the first dose of required immunizations by the 14th day of school will be excluded from class. Students must continue to receive subsequent vaccines within a 14-day period to remain eligible for in-person learning.

Parents with questions about vaccines are encouraged to speak with their child’s primary care provider. For those without a provider—or for families facing difficulties accessing vaccines—the Cayuga County Health Department is offering appointments for back-to-school immunization clinics. Call 315-253-1560 for scheduling.
