The New York Mets couldn’t escape their recent slump Friday night, falling 4-3 to the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings at Citi Field for their fourth straight loss.
Former Met Dom Smith delivered the decisive blow, lining an RBI single off Edwin Díaz to put San Francisco ahead for good. New York had a chance in the bottom half, loading the bases with two outs, but Ronny Mauricio struck out against closer Randy Rodriguez to end the game.
David Peterson continued his strong season, allowing just two runs over six innings while surpassing a career-high 127 innings pitched. Both runs came in the second inning on an RBI double from Casey Schmitt and a run-scoring groundout from Jung Hoo Lee.
Pete Alonso broke a 0-for-19 skid in the seventh with a solo homer, his 23rd of the season and 249th of his career, cutting the deficit to 3-1. New York tied it in the eighth when Brandon Nimmo walked, Francisco Lindor singled to snap an 0-for-13 slump, and Juan Soto drove in Nimmo with an infield hit. Alonso added a sacrifice fly to plate Lindor.
Newly acquired Ryan Helsley impressed in his Mets debut, striking out three in a scoreless ninth while touching 101.4 mph.
The Mets (62-48) look to end their four-game losing streak on Saturday when they hand the ball to Kodai Senga, with the first pitch scheduled for 4:10 p.m.
