Orange redraws fire district map, will include Monterey VFD

Town of Orange officials are redrawing a proposed fire district map after residents raised concerns during a public hearing this week, according to WENY.

The town shared the update during its monthly board meeting Wednesday, following a well-attended hearing Tuesday where some residents said they did not receive enough notice about the proposal.

Monterey Volunteer Fire Department President Mary Cunningham said residents learned about the hearing through small newspaper notices, including one in an Ithaca paper she said many people in the area do not receive.

Town Clerk and Tax Collector Thomas Peer told WENY the revised map will be presented at the Aug. 12 Town Board meeting. He said the updated version will include the Monterey Volunteer Fire Department.

Some residents said they were hopeful the process would become more constructive. Peg Rappleye, vice president of the Monterey Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, said she was nervous about the map being redrawn but willing to work with the town toward a better outcome.
