The National Science Foundation will invest $20 million to launch a Cornell-led institute aimed at revolutionizing materials discovery using artificial intelligence, according to the Cornell Chronicle. The Artificial Intelligence Materials Institute (AI-MI) will be directed by physics professor Eun-Ah Kim and include partners from multiple universities.
AI-MI plans to combine machine learning with human expertise to accelerate breakthroughs in quantum tech, sustainable energy, and electronics. A major feature will be AIMS-EC, a cloud platform integrating AI with scientific data to design new materials and uncover solutions to global challenges like microplastic pollution.
The project will also support education, partnering with schools and research centers to prepare students for careers at the AI-science intersection. Officials say the institute positions Cornell at the forefront of next-generation discovery.
